Yesterday I made this blog force anyone trying to enter the non-www version of this blog, to the www one. So for example, entering bitsniff.com/blog/article, will lead you yo www.bitsniff.com/blog/article. This has its benefits(might make an article about it in the future), and it’s really easy to accomplish. So I thought I might share this with those of you who havn’t got this working, or just heard of it. (Only works with WordPress)

1. Change WordPress Adress

Enter the admin section of your blog, and go to Options. This should lead you to the General tab, which is the one we need. In the WordPress address and Blog address, enter your desired URI. In this case http://www.bitsniff.com/blog.

2. Enforce www. Preference

Download and install the plugin Enforce www. Preference. This plugin will force all of your visitors to either the no-www or the yes-www version of your address, depending on your choice in the first step. So in this case, if anyone enter http://bitsniff.com/blog/10/goals/, they will end up at http://www.bitsniff.com/blog/10/goals/.

Thats it! Easy, huh? Got any questions? Feel free to leave a comment :)

Upgrading Trouble

I was gonna upgrade to Word Press 2.3 today, I made a backup of the old blog files incase something would go wrong. So I started sending over the files to the blog but it didn’t work at all, so I sent back the old files. Everything worked perfectly except one small thing, my right menu wasn’t displayed.

Instead there were an error message saying; Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class magpierss in /home/kalle437/public_html/ and I was like wtf?! The public_html map is the root map of this website, but all of the files associated with this blog is stored in public_html/blog/, so how could an error in the root files affect this blog?

I decided to take a bit of a break. When I got back I was gonna post for help on some different forums, since that was my best bet of getting this problem solved. As I copied the error message to the post text I noticed something that I hadn’t noticed before.

I hadn’t seen the full error message, a part of it was hid under the table border. This was what the full message looked like; Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class magpierss in /home/kalle437/public_html/blog/wp-includes/rss.php on line 16.

That makes this problem thousand times easier to solve. I checked my backup map for the file rss.php to repair the error, but I didn’t find it. So, this must mean rss.php came with the new WordPress version, and is causing the error. I removed the file and viola!, now it’s working again.

Offtopic

In the meanwhile I made the adress of this blog look like this http://www.bitsniff.com/blog, which in my oppinion looks much more proffesional than the old http://bitsniff.com/blog. So if you try to enter an old post with the old adress, for example http://bitsniff.com/blog/10/goals/, you’ll end up at http://www.bitsniff.com/blog/10/goals/, which was my intention.

Only one more problem to solve now, the logo. For some reason the logo ain’t displayed, it’s just white. Gonna find out whats causing this problem and solve it.

I was gonna update the blog to version 2.3. Now it looks like this, the right side is bugging but nothing else, so I checked out the www.bitsniff.com adress and now it looks like I wanted it to be, just that when you try to click on a link it doesn’t show up.

I’m gonna try to fix this problem as quick as possible. Thanks for your understanding :)

Goals

From now on I’m gonna make goals for this blog in the beginning of each month and see if I manage to achieve these before it ends. I believe this will be good for the development of this blog, since I can organise my goals and I get a bit of preasure of achieving these since they go live and not just some random goals that pop up in my head.

Here it goes, wish me luck:

  • Installing the “Diggs counter”
  • Writing a post that will get at least 100 diggs
  • Getting 30 RSS readers
  • Getting 500 unique visitors

This list might be a bit optimistic, but with the right Marketing combined with the right Post I’m sure its doable. If I succeed I might write a kind of step-by-step guide of how I did this. I know it’s no big numbers, but some people might be interested :)

Call Me Stupid

Go ahead. I didn’t manage to move the blog last night. I blame a bug in my ftp program or something. Seriously, if you enter www.bitsniff.com you’ll see the last page I had as index.html. Now I have no index.html file, the only index.xxx file I got is the index.php file. Try to enter /index.html or /index.htm and you’ll notice one doesn’t exist and one doesn’t look like the www.bitsniff.com mainpage. I’ve checked all the files in the root folder but none of them looks like the file that displays when I enter the mainpage.

I’m starting to get mad at this. Think I’ll just put this project on for a later date, there’s no rush, is it? :)

Moving The Blog

Since I havn’t got any use of the http://www.bitsniff.com adress I decided to move the blog there. It doesn’t look proffesional with the current adress http://bitsniff.com/blog/.

Depending how well I do this, the blog may work perfect again in like 10 minutes, or everything might be just fucked up for a while. Nevertheless I’m gonna start moving the blog now, see you on the other side :)

PicRun.com

As I stated in some earlier post I earned about $1 / month from my image host PicRun.com without any promotion. Yesterday I did some 2 mins promotion and to my big surprise I earned $0,62 that day. So maybe it would be a good idea to keep promoting this site just a little bit every day.

But, as I figured when the site had its best days, I can’t go further without a dedicated host. At that time I had like 10,000+ unique visitors to the site every day, and the day I earned the most I think I got $20. But this only lasted for three days because people learned that the site got too slow when it had many visitors, and I was about to go past the Bandwith limit with my current host, so I stopped the promotion fully.

The only way I could go further and really go big is to buy dedicated hosting. But the thing is I don’t afford that. I was trying really badly to get deals with dedicated hosting companies, but it didn’t work very well. So I stopped the promoting.

Today I might have found someone that is willing to make a deal. Lets hope for the best. :)

Posting Much

As you can see in this post, yesterday I checked some statistics of my sites on Google Analytics. I kept checking some more today and I noticed an old blog that I made long ago which has like 1 or 2 posts in it got 20 visitors the last month. It’s not much, not much at all. But 90% of the visitors came from search engines, which is the best traffic you can get. This means if you got a blog with a lot of QUALITY posts on different topics you should get a lot of traffic from search engines to your old posts. With good AdSense placement on these you should be able to earn some extra cash :)

Addiction

I was helping a friend moving today, it was rough but still pretty pleasant. But I had one thing on my mind all the time. My blog. I can’t really explain the feeling but it was like I was longing for the blog all the time, I thought about what to write, how to market it and how to monetize it. It was pretty nice just walking around and thinking of this, but the computer was missing and I almost got the shakes :)

Checked Site Statistics

If you check at like four posts back you will notice there’s a gap of about 7 months between the posts. For theese 7 months I’ve been away from my webmaster role fully. I don’t even remember the names of sites I used to visit back then. Nevertheless I visited Google Analytics to check if I got any traffics to any of my sites the latest month. To my surprise PicRun.com got 2,000+ visitors, and I havn’t marketed it anything for theese 7 months. That must mean some people are using it and I earned like 1$ per month on it with AdSense (Wohoo!!).

It’s no money to brag about or anything, but I’m just amazed I still get visitors :)
